5 Grand Facts About the Grand Canyon

When it comes to appreciating the majesty and grandeur of nature, no other national park quite compares to the Grand Canyon.

With nearly 2,000 miles that make up this geographical wonder, it’s no coincidence the Grand Canyon National Park is one we wholeheartedly support at Sportiqe. Not only is the Grand Canyon within the same state as our headquarters, but it’s also an endless source of inspiration, exploration, and roaming for the millions around the world who visit it every year.

Just what makes the Grand Canyon so grand? Let us count the ways. Here are five stunning facts about this wonder of the world.

1. The Grand Canyon could be its own state. The Grand Canyon is so expansive that it rivals some of America’s smaller states. It’s bigger than the size of Rhode Island and just two square miles shy of Delaware.

2. It has its own climate system. Step into Grand Canyon National Park and experience an entirely independent climate system. This is because, given the size and depth, the Grand Canyon itself influences the weather. The depth of the canyons and the rough terrain create solar heating and air circulation while also generating various microclimates, depending on the exact location. If you’re inspired to roam the Grand Canyon, pay close attention to the forecast, as the weather can vary greatly.

3. Dinosaurs never roamed the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon’s formation has been millions of years in the making. Even though the canyon’s rocks date back to before the Mesozoic Era, archaeologists never found fossils of dinosaurs within the canyon's depths. The conclusion? The canyon formed at a much later date, well after dinosaurs were extinct.

4. At its depths, you’ll find a small town. Roam to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, about 3,000 feet, and you’ll discover the village of Supai – complete with mail service, a cafe, and a small hotel. Supai is part of the Havasupai Indian Reservation, the place where the tribe has lived for more than 1,000 years. Considered one of the most remote communities in the United States, Supai has a population of just 208 and holds the title of being the only place where mail is delivered by pack mule.

5. It has some of the nation’s cleanest air. The mantra of getting fresh air takes on new meaning when at the Grand Canyon. Its air is known to be some of the cleanest in the entire nation and contributes greatly to the visitors' visibility. The reason? It’s mainly because of strict monitoring and air protection measures – a collaborative effort between the state of Arizona; Western Regional Air Partnership (WRAP); Environmental Protection Agency; Bureau of Land Management, Fish & Wildlife Service; and U.S. Forest Service.
